A future where everybody wins

It’s been just over two months since Adaptive Insights became a Workday company. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the Workday family. We’re especially excited about the road ahead for us and how this combination makes us even stronger.

For our more than 4,000 customers, this is nothing but good news. You won’t lose any of the things you’ve always loved about Adaptive Insights. Not one. And now that we’re a Workday company, we will innovate even faster than we ever could in the past.

At the annual Workday Rising user conference last week, Adaptive Insights had a featured role. Our CEO, Tom Bogan, delivered a keynote speech on why planning is a critical strategic advantage for modern businesses. I led a session outlining our vision and roadmap for the Adaptive Insights Business Planning Cloud. We designed and hosted numerous breakout sessions, and we introduced the Workday community to the benefits of active planning—a business advantage you all know well.

In my presentation, the team and I described the innovations in store for the Adaptive Insights Business Planning Cloud and what it means to become a unified part of the Workday suite—to be part of Workday’s long-held “Power of One” philosophy. That idea is to deliver to Workday customers a single unified system to plan, execute, and analyze their businesses. Customers will experience a single source for data, a single security model, a single user experience, and one community for planning, and ERP and human capital management (HCM) business execution and analysis. That means Adaptive Insights and Workday will come together, not through services-led integration projects, but through the products themselves.

Clearly, Adaptive Insights is not yet a unified participant in the Power of One. But it will be. I am committed to bringing our Business Planning Cloud into the Power of One while remaining fully dedicated to our existing innovation road map for both our stand-alone planning customers and our new Workday customers. In my presentation, I also discussed why it is important for us to remain open and to support all back-end systems—and why. It’s just as essential that we also stay true to the road map that we shared with you all at Adaptive Live 2018.

Yet as we more tightly integrate with the Workday suite, some of you may be wondering: How will you folks at Adaptive Insights manage to achieve all this in a way that doesn’t disrupt your innovation road map, your ability to integrate with third-party platforms, and your commitment to focus on the specific planning needs of finance and business users? Can you really pull this off?

Here’s a simple answer: We can, and we will! Let me explain how.

We were built in—and for—the cloud

When Adaptive Insights was born in the cloud about 15 years ago, our founding engineers built a multi-tenant, cloud platform based on in-memory computing right from the get-go. (Perhaps not surprisingly, Workday has very much the same history and design ethos.) A cloud-first approach to technology and delivery, with similar approaches to computing—one that has since evolved to a services-based architecture—enables us to evolve and unify the services across the two platforms while hiding all the complexity from users like you. More importantly, it enables us to unify into the Workday Power of One without so-called “re-platforming.”

What does re-platforming mean, anyway? In July, we announced the next generation of our in-memory compute engine, our patent-pending Elastic Hypercube Technology that we are now rolling out to our customers. Did we re-platform? Not exactly, but we did make a major, step-function transformation of our technology. But—and this is critical—we did it in a way that was completely “under the hood.” Our customers do not need to change a single thing in their models or their implementation to get all the benefits of Elastic Hypercube Technology.

We’ll use the very same approach to bring our Business Planning Cloud into the Workday Power of One. We will do this in such a way that does not impact our current and future customers. We won’t rewrite the features that our customers love and use today. We won’t ask our customers to reimplement their models because, again, this work will take place under the hood. For Workday customers, we will take advantage of the architectural similarities between Adaptive Insights and Workday to unify our solutions into the Workday Power of One. At the same time, our existing and new stand-alone customers will only experience new product innovations—those we have already committed to in our road map and new innovations that Workday brings to the party and that will benefit our non-Workday customers.

Yes, we will leverage Workday technology innovation. Why wouldn’t we? Today, like most companies, we borrow from open-source technology significantly, and we buy libraries in areas that aren’t part of our core competency. Now we have another source to dip into for technology innovation—be it in the area of analytics, machine learning, mobile, or leveraging Workday’s deep expertise in HR and the financial close process. With that rich vein of expertise and market leadership now at our fingertips, we’d be crazy not to.

But leveraging assets and unifying experiences is not re-platforming. Not even close. These measures are merely well-tested means of bringing innovation to market. And I’m talking about innovation that benefits all types of customers—all sizes, in all markets—because no business succeeds when it plays favorites.

Even as we improve and evolve, we will not disrupt the implementations, workflows, and integrations that you rely on. You’ll still have all the familiarity and ease of use that you’ve come to expect from our Business Planning Cloud. And it will keep getting even better.

We’re expanding our third-party integration, not restricting it

We already maintain and support more than 150 third-party integrations. Next year, there will be even more. Why? Because as I’ve noted before (though it’s worth repeating), an open cloud platform—one that actively integrates with the back-end systems organizations run their business on—is just common sense.

Naturally, we will tighten our alignment with the Workday suite—and this will introduce an array of opportunities for combining planning with Workday’s business execution capabilities. But we now have more resources than ever to put toward not just maintaining, but enhancing our integration with any and all systems our customers use, from Oracle NetSuite to SAP and the rest. We will continue to maintain a systems-agnostic stance today and into the future. This has been a significant part of our long-term strategy that has helped Adaptive Insights become a recognized leader in the CPM industry. Integration with multiple systems is simply the nature of the planning business.

I encourage every Adaptive Insights customer to view this marriage as something that will empower everyone in your organization to plan more effectively, strategically, and collaboratively than ever before. For our customers who use Workday, you’ll see a seamlessly unified planning and execution environment. For customers who use Adaptive Insights with other ERP, GL, and HCM platforms, you’ll continue to experience the benefits of Adaptive Insights Business Planning Cloud you’ve come to know and trust, but one that’s always innovating, always integrating, and always open.

That’s one powerful future. And it’s the future we’re building for you.
